Beautiful Igbo Traditional Wedding at BICS Garden in Lekki, Nigeria

Brianna Kozlarek / Wednesday April 5, 2017

It’s #WeddingWednesday which means two things: we’re half way through the week and we’ve got some gorgeousness to share. Muoyo and Chijioke had an elegant, traditional Igbo wedding at BICS Garden in Lekki.  Our uber talented #PrettyPerfectPartner Wani Olatunde  captured this beautiful day. Said Wani ” It was such a relaxed day with pretty decor and a great couple – what more could a girl want?! I loved the pop of colour against the minimalist background.” We couldn’t agree more – and can we talk about the cake from Andy Clark Cakes? The figurines on top are so cute and such a fun personal touch. Okay enough talking, time to soak it all in:

About the Igbo Traditional Marriage Ceremony (Igba Nkwu)

An Igbo traditional marriage ceremony starts way in advance of the actual wedding. The first step is the marriage request and official proposal by the groom and his family. Once the bride’s family convenes and consents, the two fathers “symbolically” discuss a bride-price and agree to the “terms” of marriage.

On the wedding day itself, the groom is placed in the crowd and told to await his bride. The bride’s father then fills a cup with palm wine and hands it to the bride for her groom. She dances around the ceremony, playfully distracted by attendees, looking for her rightful groom. Once she finds him, the bride hands the groom the cup of palm wine to drink. Only after he has sipped the palm wine, are they considered married traditionally.
