It’s been just about 6 weeks since our wedding day. Strangely, it feels like it’s been both a lifetime and a handful of seconds since we said “I do.” During our honeymoon and these past few weeks, Brandon and I have had many conversations about our values and goals for our marriage and it’s been really lovely to settle into our new life together and have all of the wedding madness in the rear view. I’ve had a lot of time to reflect about our wedding day; what moments stood out to me and what didn’t end up mattering, like, at all (lookin’ at you aisle runner). But what really surprised me was just how nervous I was before I walked down the aisle. That morning getting ready with my girls I was surprisingly relaxed and happy. Once we got to the venue, however, my nerves kicked into high gear. I was triple checking my hair and makeup with shaky hands, I began to sweat, and when I put on my dress my heart was racing a mile a minute. When my Dad came into the holding room and told me it was almost time, it was everything I could do to hold it together and not tear up with anticipation.
This honestly surprised me so much. I have a background in theater, so it’s not the idea of being in front of a crowd that troubled me. And I’ve been sure about Brandon since basically our first date, so this wasn’t some sort of cold feet situation. When I reflect on this moment, I think there are a lot of factors that played into my nervousness. I had been working tirelessly on creating a perfect day for over a year, and it had finally come. The wait was over. My Dad was standing there looking like a million bucks, ready to walk me down the aisle, something I dreamed about ohhh maybe 1,000,000 times as a little girl. The dress was really heavy (what, it’s a factor!) But most importantly, I think it was the realness of the moment. Throughout the three years I’ve been with Brandon, almost every single day I have to pinch myself, wondering how on Earth I got so damn lucky. When I say he is the best man on the planet, I mean it 100%. Like, if I have a daughter, I hope she marries someone exactly like Brandon. And the idea that this was really happening, that I really was about to marry the man of my dreams…well, that just about did me in. Of course as soon as I locked eyes with him when they opened the doors, those heart palpitations turned into the most pure happiness I’ve ever felt.
