It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. The love of your life is on one knee proposing with your dream ring (keeping our #apbling page open on your laptop = major key). After you’ve said yes, wiped away the happy tears and called everyone you’ve ever met to share the big news, there’s one more thing you should do right away: insure that rock. Your man likely spent a pretty penny to get you this gorgeous piece, not to mention the sentimental value that you really can’t put a number on. So, here’s 5 ways to protect your one and only engagement ring:

1.) Get it sized

Unless your man is a super sleuth and got your ring size perfectly right (if so, we’re impressed) odds are your ring is slightly off, and usually too big. You can get a temporary ring sizer until you make it to the jeweler, but you definitely do not want to wait too long. A loose ring on your finger is a ticking time bomb, so get that beauty sized perfectly ASAP.

2.) NEVER take if off in public

This was the #1 thing my mother, grandmothers and aunts said to me. We were touching up our lipstick in the powder room when I took off my ring to wash my hands. My mother literally gasped, “NEVER DO THAT!” Those horror lenries about women who left their rings in public restrooms or restaurants? Yea, you do not want to be one of them. If you’re wearing it out, it stays on no matter what.

3.) Get it checked and keep it clean

Think of your ring as an extension of yourself. You’d never miss your yearly physical or skip your morning shower, so treat your ring the same. Make sure to bring it in at last once a year (6 months is preferable) to get the prongs checked and make sure everything looks secure. You also want to get your ring cleaned, or keep it clean at home with some bling wipes to keep it looking flawless.

4.) Store it somewhere safe (and cute, obvi)

Just like a ring can be lost in public, it’s super easy to lose at home too. So get yourself a cute ring dish to keep by your bedside table. Make it a part of your nightly routine to place the ring there every night and then you will always know where it is. Plus there’s so many cute options out there!

5.) Insure it

Just like you insure your home and your car, you NEED to insure your ring. Not only due to the financial investment your man has made, but also to protect this beautiful symbol of your love. Luckily, there are companies like Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company who have got an amazing, comprehensive insurance plan built around the way you live your life. The company was started in Wisconsin by jewelers for jewelers over 100 years ago  – in 1913, so you know they’re the real deal. Jewelers Mutual®  understands what your jewelry means to you, so their policies offer worldwide travel coverage, the flexibility to work with your own jeweler (bonus!), an optional $0 deductible. And their coverage…Lost your ring? Covered. Your ring was stolen? Covered. You’re unsure what’s happened to it, but you can’t find it? Covered. As Jewelers Mutual has only covered jewelry for 103 years, they do it better than anyone else, and you know your ring is in the right hands.
